HDI monomer has a vapour pressure of 0.05 mmHg at 25°C and the vapour is a strong isocyanate respiratory sensitiser (OEL 0.005 ppm as NCO, 8h TWA in EU). Nitrogen blanketing prevents moisture ingress (which would cause CO₂ generation and NCO loss) and minimises headspace vapour exposure during drum opening. Mandatory PPE: supplied-air respirator during drum opening and transfer, impermeable gloves, full face shield. Emergency response: in case of spill, contain with sand/vermiculite; do NOT use water (exothermic CO₂ release).
