2-Methylimidazole (2MZ) Epoxy Catalyst/Hardener Accelerator

2MZ (melting point 142–147°C) has higher thermal activation than 2E4MZ (mp 39–45°C), providing better latency at process temperatures up to 100°C. This makes 2MZ preferred in high-temperature prepreg processes (100–110°C press temperature, cure at 170–180°C) where 2E4MZ would cause premature gelling. 2MZ at 2–4 phr with DICY gives cure at 160–180°C/30 min; 2E4MZ at same level allows 130–150°C cure. For maximum latency with fast high-temperature cure, 2MZ is the standard imidazole choice in aerospace and high-Tg PCB laminate systems.
