Caprolactam-blocked HDI trimer deblocks at slightly higher temperature (160–180°C vs 150–165°C for uretdione) and releases ε-caprolactam as a byproduct which must volatilise from the melt — requiring well-designed oven airflow to prevent surface defects. Uretdione types release no byproduct and are preferred for thin-film automotive powder clears. Caprolactam types remain more economical and deliver excellent UV resistance in architectural powder coatings.
