Functional Coatings

Specialty coating systems for performance properties: anti-corrosion, anti-static, easy-clean, anti-fingerprint, thermal management, anti-icing, and anti-microbial.

Functional coatings deliver a defined performance property beyond protection and decoration: corrosion inhibition on offshore structures, anti-fingerprint surfaces on consumer electronics, easy-clean nano-TiO2 photocatalysis on architectural facades, electrically conductive paths in EMI shielding, anti-icing for aerospace and wind energy. The chemistry is application-specific — there's no universal 'functional resin' — and the formulation precision required is generally higher than standard architectural or industrial coatings.

Coatingsink supplies the functional-coatings raw materials across the major performance classes: anti-corrosion primer resins, electrically-conductive silicone systems, anti-static coating resins, fluoropolymer (PVDF) dispersions for non-stick and weathering, easy-clean nano-TiO2 systems, icephobic lubricant-infused coatings, anti-microbial silver-ion additives, anti-graffiti fluoropolymer protective topcoats, and self-healing polymer resins. Each system ships with a documented performance test method and target value.

How to Choose Functional Coatings

Key selection criteria buyers use when specifying functional coatings for trade and OEM formulations

01

Primary Function

Identify the single most-important property: corrosion resistance? Hydrophobicity? Conductivity? Anti-microbial? The choice determines binder family. Multi-functional coatings (e.g., anti-corrosion + anti-fingerprint) usually mean two-coat systems, not one resin.

02

Substrate & Adhesion

Functional coatings often go on demanding substrates: aluminum aerospace skin, stainless steel medical, glass electronics. Adhesion testing under the actual functional service condition (wet, hot, fatigued) is critical. Plan substrate-prep and primer separately from functional topcoat.

03

Performance Test Method

Specify the test (ASTM, ISO, or industry custom) up front: salt-spray hours for anti-corrosion, contact-angle for hydrophobic, surface resistivity for conductive, biofouling reduction for anti-microbial. The test method drives raw-material specification.

04

Service Life vs Cost

Functional coatings are expensive — set realistic service-life targets based on environment. A nano-TiO2 easy-clean coating may last 5 years on a façade; the same chemistry in a kitchen takes 18 months. Match cost to expected replacement cycle.

Functional Coatings FAQ

Two main systems: (1) inorganic ethyl silicate zinc-rich (better salt-spray, requires careful application); (2) epoxy-binder zinc-rich primer (zinc-rich-primer-binder-ep-zr) — easier application, slightly lower performance. Both contain 75–92% zinc dust by weight. For offshore structures, layer organic over inorganic for best long-term performance.
