Properly dosed polyether silicone leveling agents reduce surface tension uniformly, allowing the coating to flow into a mirror-smooth film that maximizes specular reflectance and gloss (BYK Gardner 20°/60°/85° improvements of 2–8 units are typical). Overdosing creates silicone migration to the air interface, forming a micro-haze layer that reduces gloss and causes recoat adhesion failure. The sweet spot is typically 0.1–0.3% on solid resin.
