Acetylenic Diol Wetting Agent Surfynol-104 Type (Low Foam)

Surfynol-104 type (2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-5-decyne-4,7-diol, HLB≈4) has low water solubility and functions primarily as a dynamic surface tension reducer and defoamer in waterborne systems. It is supplied in propylene glycol or ethylene glycol. Surfynol-420 type is the ethoxylated (3.5 EO) version with HLB≈8–9, water-soluble, and more effective for substrate wetting on polar surfaces. Choose 104-type where foam control is the primary need; choose 420-type where wetting on difficult substrates (polyolefin, metal) is the priority.
