Span-80 (HLB 4.3) and Tween-80 (HLB 15.0) are blended in ratios to achieve target HLB values for specific emulsification needs. For O/W emulsions at HLB 10–12, a 30:70 Span-80:Tween-80 blend is typical. The combination also reduces foam compared to Tween-80 alone due to Span-80's low aqueous solubility acting as a defoaming co-surfactant.
