FAQ
Carbon black particles have extremely small primary particle size (10–80 nm) and high surface area (50–1500 m²/g), with strong inter-particle van der Waals attraction forming hard aggregates. The graphitic surface is non-polar and hydrophobic, resisting wetting by water-based systems. Effective dispersion requires three steps: wetting (surfactant penetrates aggregates), mechanical deaggregation (bead mill), and stabilization (dispersant prevents re-agglomeration). Sulfonate dispersants provide electrostatic repulsion through their anionic character, while aromatic rings have affinity for the graphitic carbon surface through π-π stacking.
