FAQ

Migration from UV-cured inks/coatings into food or adjacent materials is governed by diffusion coefficient, which decreases dramatically with molecular weight. Monomeric photoinitiators (MW 200–500 Da, e.g., PI-184, benzophenone) have high diffusion coefficients and can migrate through paper or thin plastic at ppb levels. Polymeric photoinitiators (MW >1,000 Da) have 10–100× lower diffusion coefficients, with migration rates well below EU SML (specific migration limit) requirements for food contact. Additionally, polymeric types that are incorporated into the cured network (reactive functionality) achieve near-zero migration.
