Organoclay Rheological Additive NB-34

Organoclay must be pre-gelled (activated) before addition to the main formulation to develop full rheological performance. The standard method: disperse NB-34 at 5–10% concentration in the coating's own solvent or a polar activator (e.g., 95% solvent + 5% methanol or propylene carbonate) using high-speed dispersion at 1000–3000 rpm for 15–20 minutes, then allow to swell for at least 30 minutes. Omitting this step results in poor thickening, soft gel structure, and inadequate anti-settling. The LOI value (34–38%) reflects the organic quaternary ammonium modification level, which governs solvent compatibility.
