FAQ

Flash rust occurs when water-based coatings are applied to bare steel: iron ions dissolve at anodic sites during the wet film stage, forming iron hydroxide/oxide clusters (rust) before the film dries. These rust spots break through the coating surface within minutes to hours of application. Organic amine phosphate inhibitors prevent flash rust by: (1) forming a thin passivation layer on the steel surface through phosphate adsorption and (2) the amine component creating a basic local pH at the metal interface that suppresses anodic dissolution. Effective dosage is 0.3–0.8% in the formulation, verified by wet-metal adhesion testing.
