Certain pigment types (iron oxide, ultramarine blue, carbon black) contain trace transition metals (Fe, Cu, Mn) that catalyze Fenton-type reactions: metal ions reduce hydroperoxides to highly reactive hydroxyl radicals that degrade the binder polymer chain. This causes premature chalking, embrittlement, and color shift in outdoor coatings. Metal deactivators (MD-1024) are chelating agents that form stable, inactive complexes with free metal ions, removing them from the catalytic cycle. They are particularly important in high-pigment-volume coatings (>20% PVC) and coatings on copper or bronze substrates where metal ion leaching occurs.
