FAQ
Hydrophobically modified HEC (HMHEC) has short hydrophobic alkyl chains grafted onto the cellulose backbone. These hydrophobes associate with latex particle surfaces and other hydrophobic domains in the coating, creating an associative thickening mechanism similar to HEUR. Compared to standard HEC, HMHEC delivers improved leveling and lower spatter because the associative network breaks cleanly at high shear (roller application) and rebuilds quickly. It also enhances open time in latex paints and improves water resistance of the dried film slightly, since the hydrophobic substituents reduce the film's water sensitivity.
