Mineral oil-based defoamers can cause fisheyeing and are not suitable for food-contact or interior applications where VOC or odor is a concern. Non-silicone, mineral oil-free defoamers based on modified alcohols, hydrophobic silica, or synthetic polymers avoid these drawbacks while still providing effective micro-foam knockdown, making them ideal for high-gloss architectural and wood coatings where surface defects are most visible.

When should the defoamer WB-100 be added — during grinding or let-down?

Best practice is to split the defoamer addition: add 50% during the grind phase to knock down macro-foam generated by high-shear dispersion, and add the remaining 50% during let-down to control micro-foam introduced by the addition of subsequent components. This ensures both types of foam are addressed. Adding all defoamer at the beginning of the grind may result in some activity being exhausted before micro-foam-generating additives are incorporated. Stir-in at low shear after addition to avoid introducing additional air.
