FAQ

Carbon black surface chemistry varies by grade. Furnace blacks treated with oxidation have acidic surface groups (COOH, OH) and are best stabilized by cationic (amine or quaternary ammonium) dispersants through acid-base interaction. Channel blacks and some specialty blacks are less oxidized and respond better to anionic dispersants. Cationic dispersants are also preferred in solventborne epoxy systems where the cationic charge provides good compatibility with amine-cured epoxy matrices. Never mix cationic and anionic dispersants in the same formulation as they will precipitate.
