FAQ
Benzotriazole (BTA) forms a stable chemisorbed monolayer on copper surfaces through coordination of the triazole nitrogen lone pairs with Cu(I) and Cu(II) ions. This BTA-Cu complex forms a dense, self-limiting barrier that prevents oxygen and moisture from accessing the metal surface. In coating systems, BTA migrates to the metal interface during film formation, providing active corrosion protection independent of the coating barrier properties. It is particularly effective for copper, brass, and bronze, but provides minimal protection for iron or aluminum substrates (use phosphonate or chromate alternatives for those).
