FAQ
Both zinc molybdate and zinc phosphate are anodic corrosion inhibitors that passivate steel surfaces, but they work through different mechanisms. Zinc phosphate releases phosphate ions in the presence of moisture to form an insoluble iron phosphate passivation layer. Zinc molybdate (SZM-30) releases molybdate anions (MoO4²⁻) which are very efficient anodic inhibitors — they form an insoluble iron(II) molybdate/iron(III) oxide mixed film at anodic sites that is thinner and less porous than zinc phosphate films, providing more effective passivation, particularly in neutral and alkaline pH environments. Molybdate also has mild cathodic inhibition. SZM-30 is particularly preferred in waterborne systems where its near-neutral pH (6–8 slurry) does not disrupt resin emulsions.
