Its clean greenish-yellow hue, high tinting strength (105–120%), and good compatibility with acrylic and vinyl-acrylic latex binders make it the default choice for interior architectural coatings. It disperses readily in water with common polyacrylate dispersants, and its moderate lightfastness (5–6) is adequate for interior applications where prolonged UV exposure is not a concern.

Can PY 74 be used in exterior architectural coatings?

PY 74's lightfastness of 5–6 is borderline for exterior exposure. For critical exterior applications with a 5–10 year durability requirement, PY 151 (benzimidazolone) or PY 181 are preferred as they offer ratings of 7–8. PY 74 can be used in exterior tinting bases at low addition levels where the dominant white pigment (TiO2) provides most of the UV protection, but full-strength yellow shades should use a higher-performance grade.
