White corundum (α-Al2O3) has a Mohs hardness of 9.0 versus 7.0 for quartz, making it significantly more wear-resistant under foot traffic or vehicle tyres. Its angular particle morphology creates effective mechanical grip while resisting wear-down over the coating's service life. Unlike silica sand, corundum also contains no crystalline silica, avoiding respirable silica exposure concerns during application.
