FAQ
Hydrous aluminum silicate (also known as hydrated kaolin) retains its chemically bonded water molecules (Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄), giving it a softer, more platy particle morphology and lower oil absorption compared to calcined kaolin. Calcined kaolin has been dehydrated by high-temperature processing, resulting in harder particles, higher surface area, and greater matting efficiency. Hydrous grades are preferred where lower oil absorption, better gloss, and easier dispersion are priorities, such as in waterborne primers and sealants, while calcined grades are selected for maximum matting performance.
