Chrome Oxide Green (Cr₂O₃)

Chrome oxide green (Cr₂O₃) is the benchmark for military camouflage coatings because its spectral reflectance in the near-infrared (NIR) region closely mimics that of green vegetation. Standard imaging devices used in battlefield surveillance are designed to detect the NIR signature of synthetic colours, which typically reflect less NIR light than natural foliage. Cr₂O₃'s reflectance profile passes this detection threshold, meeting NATO STANAG 2333 and similar specifications. Its extreme durability (lightfastness 8, heat stable to 1000°C) also suits it to long-service military equipment.
