An epoxy ester is produced by reacting epoxy resin with fatty acids (typically from drying oils such as linseed, tall oil or soya). The esterification converts epoxy groups into ester linkages that are auto-oxidatively crosslinkable, similar to alkyd resins. Unlike standard epoxies, epoxy esters dry by oxidative cure (no hardener required), giving excellent adhesion to metal, good corrosion resistance and compatibility with water. WEE-60 is further modified to be reducible with water after amine neutralization of the acid groups.

How do I thin and apply WEE-60 in a waterborne anti-corrosion primer formulation?

Accepted Answer

Neutralize the acid groups with a volatile amine (typically dimethylethanolamine, DMEA) at 90–100% neutralization degree to achieve pH 7.5–8.5. The resin then disperses readily in water with mild agitation. Dilute to application viscosity with deionized water. No additional hardener is required — the film crosslinks by oxidative cure catalyzed by drier salts (cobalt, zirconium). Typical dry film thickness for direct-to-metal primers is 30–50 µm.
