ATH decomposes endothermically at 180–200°C, absorbing 1050 kJ/kg of heat and releasing water vapor that dilutes flammable gases and cools the substrate. In intumescent coating systems (ATH + APP + carbonific source), ATH additionally contributes to foam formation and char quality.
