Standard micron-size ZnO particles (>1 µm) scatter visible light due to Mie scattering, producing white, opaque films unsuitable for clear topcoats or optical applications. Nanoparticle ZnO at 20–40 nm is below the wavelength of visible light (~400–700 nm), so it does not scatter visible radiation and produces transparent films. Despite their transparency to visible light, nanoparticles strongly absorb UV (280–380 nm) because ZnO's bandgap energy matches UV photon energy, providing excellent UV blocking.
