FAQ
Styrene grafting onto alkyd resin during manufacture introduces rigid polystyrene segments that dramatically improve three properties: (1) Drying speed — styrene reactive groups increase the oxidative crosslink density, reducing touch-dry time from 6–8 hours to 2–4 hours; (2) Hardness — pencil hardness improves from B–HB (unmodified) to H–2H; (3) Initial gloss — 60° gloss routinely exceeds 90 units vs 80–85 for unmodified equivalents. The principal limitation of SA-45 is exterior durability: the same phenyl groups that accelerate drying also photooxidize, causing chalking within 12–24 months outdoors. Styrenated alkyds are therefore reserved for interior metal coatings (industrial machinery, indoor structural steel), general metal enamels, and primer-sealers where the improved production speed and gloss outweigh limited outdoor durability.
