Fumed silica (pyrogenic silica) is produced by flame hydrolysis of SiCl₄ at 1000–1200°C: SiCl₄ + 2H₂O → SiO₂ + 4HCl. The resulting SiO₂ particles (5–50 nm primary particle size, BET 50–400 m²/g) are used in coatings as thixotropic rheology modifiers, anti-settling agents, matting agents, and abrasion-resistance enhancers. SiCl₄ purity directly determines fumed silica quality: Fe contamination causes color tinting, HCl residual affects pH and dispersibility. Electronic-grade SiCl₄ (Fe ≤0.1 ppm) is required for optical fiber preform production via MCVD or OVD processes.
