FAQ
D3 (hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane) has higher ring strain than D4 and D5, giving it a faster ring-opening rate under both anionic and cationic initiation at ambient or mild temperatures. This makes D3 the monomer of choice when narrow molecular-weight-distribution PDMS is required, since the faster equilibration kinetics allow better MW control. D3 is also used in vapor-phase deposition of thin silicone films (plasma CVD) where its higher vapor pressure relative to D4 allows better flux control.
