SCA-40 uses N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) functional groups incorporated into the acrylic backbone during emulsion polymerization. Upon film formation and drying above MFFT, the NMA groups undergo auto-condensation and react with amide groups, forming methylene ether and methylene bridges that create a crosslinked network without any added crosslinker. This simplifies formulation (single-component system), eliminates pot life concerns, and reduces the risk of measurement errors in field application. Compared to external melamine crosslinkers (which require 130–150°C bake), SCA-40 crosslinks at ambient temperature, reducing energy cost. However, crosslink density is lower than melamine-cured systems (~60% of the hardness), making SCA-40 optimal for cost-sensitive applications: corrugated board coatings, interior wood sealers, and leather finishing agents.
