FAQ

Neopentyl glycol (NPG) replaces conventional glycols (ethylene, propylene) in polyester synthesis for two reasons: (1) The gem-dimethyl group provides steric hindrance that blocks ester bond hydrolysis, dramatically improving humidity and water resistance; (2) There are no beta-hydrogens relative to the oxygen, eliminating the ether-formation side reaction during cure. Isophthalic acid (IPA) is preferred over phthalic anhydride (ortho) because the meta-positioned carboxyls impart better flexibility and reduce crystallinity compared to terephthalic (para) acid. The NPG/IPA combination yields a polyester (NPG-PE) with excellent outdoor durability, T-bend flexibility ≤1T, and pencil hardness ≥H after melamine cure—the standard specification for ASTM D522 coil coating requirements. OH value 55–65 optimizes the ratio with melamine crosslinker for stoving at 220–240°C peak metal temperature.
