Dry nitrocellulose is a Class 1 explosive under ADR/IATA. Wetting with ≥25% IPA (by weight) reduces the explosive sensitivity to a level classified as Class 4.1 flammable solid (Desensitized explosive), enabling safer transport and storage. The IPA is removed during dissolution in coating solvents and does not remain in the final formulation.
