FAR-80 is a fluoroethylene-vinyl ether copolymer (FEVE) with alternating fluoroethylene and vinyl ether units. The C–F bonds (bond energy 544 kJ/mol vs C–H at 415 kJ/mol) are not cleaved by ambient UV radiation (max 400 kJ/mol at 300 nm), making the backbone essentially inert to photo-oxidative degradation. FEVE coatings retain >90% gloss after 3000 hours QUV-A weathering where PVDF retains ~85% and standard polyurethane retains ~60%. Unlike PVDF (which requires baking at 230°C), FAR-80 is a hydroxyl-functional solution resin that crosslinks with HDI isocyanate at ambient temperature, making it processable in conventional spray application. Cost is 4–6× polyurethane, but lifecycle cost calculations for 20-year performance on infrastructure coatings (bridges, broadcasting towers, coastal facades) favor FEVE systems.
