FAQ
C5 and C9 petroleum resins are cracking by-products that differ in monomer composition and polarity: C5 resins (from piperylene, isoprene) are aliphatic, light-colored (Gardner ≤2), and compatible with natural rubber, SIS, and SBS block copolymers—making them the standard tackifier for clarity-sensitive PSA labels. C9 resins (from vinyl toluene, indene, styrene) are aromatic, amber-colored (Gardner 4–8), higher softening point (95–110°C), and compatible with polar polymers (SBR, EVA, chlorinated systems). C9 resins provide better adhesion to polar surfaces (metals, treated plastics) and higher shear resistance due to the aromatic structure's stiffness. They are preferred in SBR-based contact adhesives, aromatic ink varnish vehicles, and thermoplastic road marking paints (EN 1871) where high temperature stability is needed. The aromatic content also provides some UV absorption but leads to yellowing in exterior applications.
