Polymers, crosslinkers, plasticizers, and adhesion promoters for silicone, MS-polymer, polyurethane, polysulfide, and acrylic sealant systems.

Sealants live in the joint — they must accommodate movement (thermal expansion, vibration, settlement) over decades while maintaining a watertight, airtight seal. The polymer chemistry that delivers this elastic-recovery performance differs sharply from coatings or adhesives: long polymer chains with controlled crosslink density, plasticizer choice that doesn't migrate, and adhesion-promoter packages that bond to glass, aluminum, and concrete without primer in most cases.

Coatingsink supplies the sealant raw-materials portfolio: silicone base polymers (RTV1, vinyl-terminated PDMS), MS-polymer (silyl-modified polyether) chemistry STP-E10/E30 grades, polysulfide LP2 and LP32 polymers, polyurethane prepolymers (IPDI-based and TDI-based), the acetoxy and alkoxy crosslinkers, tin and titanate catalysts, fumed silica reinforcement, and adhesion-promoter silanes (APS, vinyl, epoxy-functional) needed to formulate construction, automotive, and industrial sealants.

Movement Capability

Class 25 sealant accommodates ±25% joint movement; Class 50 (modern silicone, MS-polymer) accommodates ±50%. Polysulfide and PU typically Class 25. Match sealant class to design joint movement (calculated from substrate thermal expansion + temperature range).

Substrate Adhesion

Silicone bonds to glass and clean metal but struggles on concrete and porous substrate without primer. MS-polymer adheres to most substrates without primer (its key advantage). PU and polysulfide need adhesion-promoter packages tuned to substrate.

Cure Mechanism

Acetoxy silicone (acid odor, fast cure, but corrodes metal) for residential glazing. Alkoxy silicone (neutral, slower, metal-safe) for industrial use. Hydroxyl-terminated silicone with tin catalyst for general purpose. MS-polymer cures via moisture activation. Polysulfide and PU are 2K systems.

Service Environment

Silicone for high-temperature (200 °C+ continuous) and UV-exposed joints. PU and polysulfide for trafficked horizontal joints (better abrasion). Acrylic for paintable interior caulks. Match polymer to environmental loads — UV, chemical, mechanical, temperature.

MS-polymer (silyl-modified polyether) gives PU-like elasticity with silicone-like UV stability and substrate adhesion — bonds to most substrates without primer, paintable, low odor, no isocyanate. PU sealants are stronger and more abrasion-resistant but need primer on glass and metal, and have isocyanate handling concerns. MS-polymer is becoming dominant for architectural and automotive sealing.
