Additives are the small-percentage ingredients that solve the formulation problems binders and pigments alone can't. A 0.2% defoamer cures a foam-out batch; 0.5% silicone leveler converts a craterous coating to glass-smooth; 1.5% HEUR thickener gives the architectural paint its can-stable, brush-friendly rheology. The compounded effect of additive selection is enormous — many coating performance differences between manufacturers come down to additive choices, not binder or pigment.
