Solventborne coatings offer superior penetration into porous substrates, better adhesion on minimally prepared surfaces, tolerance to cold or humid application conditions, and higher film build per coat. They are preferred for heavy-duty anticorrosion, marine maintenance, and industrial maintenance where surface preparation is limited. Their key disadvantages are high VOC emissions and regulatory pressure in developed markets.

Aliphatic mineral spirits (Stoddard solvent, VM&P naphtha) are standard for medium-oil alkyd house paints. Aromatic solvents (xylene, Solvesso 100) improve solvency for short-oil and specialty alkyds. High-flash solvents reduce fire risk in industrial applications. The trend is toward high-solid, low-aromatic alkyds using low-toxicity solvents such as 2-propanol or glycol esters as reactive diluents.

VOC reduction strategies include: switching to high-solid formulations (≥70% NV) using reactive diluents, using compliant low-VOC solvents exempt from regulatory caps (acetone, PCBTF in some regions), and formulating with urethane-modified or hyperbranched resins that allow high solids without viscosity increase. For the most stringent regulations, waterborne conversion is the final step.
